Summertime Volunteer Trail Work

Summer is prime time for environmental organizations and agencies to work on maintaining wilderness trails. Warmer and drier weather gives them a chance to improve existing trails for walking, hiking and biking, and to build new ones. It’s often volunteers who do most, if not all, of this work. Today, a few stories of volunteer trail work:

Truckee Trails Foundation is hosting work days where volunteers are getting out and working on a number of local trails in the Lake Tahoe area.

In Boise, the Idaho Trails Association is leading crews of volunteers into the forest to clear trails of fallen trees and other debris.

And in western Pennsylvania, a number of different organization are involved in the maintenance of hundreds of miles of trails, with the help of many dedicated volunteers who put in thousands of hours of work.  “If it wasn’t for volunteers, there wouldn’t be a trail system,” says Chris Ziegler, president of the Butler-Freeport Community Trail Council, who is quoted in the article. “Every time a tree is down, it’s a volunteer that goes out and takes care of it.”

That is no doubt true of all of these trail systems and thousands more like them all over the world.

Earth Day Volunteers

Through the Trees(Photo by Robert Barossi)

Environmental volunteers work hard every day of the year, no matter the location, weather or job to be done. They are also a big part of Earth Day, a day when people who don’t normally volunteer get involved and do something to give back for the planet. To commemorate the day, here are some Earth Day Volunteer Stories:

Cleaning lakes in Missouri.

Picking up litter in Pennsylvania.

Restoring trails along the Pacific Ocean.

Cleaning parks in New Jersey.

As this story from Rhode Island demonstrates, cities, towns and states are having numerous Earth Day events all week long.

And some cities are hosting all-day festivals, like this one in Phoenix.

No matter what kind of event it is (and these are just a few stories out of many I came across) these Earth Day efforts will hopefully get people even more interested and involved in helping the home we all share, the planet Earth.

Volunteering for National Public Lands Day

I have to confess, I had no idea that it was recently National Public Lands Day, an annual event now in it’s 21st year. This nationwide event, which occurred a few weeks ago on September 27th, included thousands of volunteers doing some amazing work across the country. Last year, events took place at over two thousand sites, where volunteers did everything from removing invasive species to repairing and maintaining trails. This blog from the U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that the Forest Service waived fees in an effort to encourage more people to join in the efforts. The National Public Lands Day website offers lots of information including ways for people to stay involved after the event. Locally, there were many events and calls put out for volunteers, all the way across the country, from these events in Alaska and in Hawaii, to these stories out of Pennsylvania and New Orleans. There are many other stories out there about all the events that no doubt made the day a huge success and a major win for our public lands.
